Aerofoam Ltd compliance and regulatory standards

Our Commitment to Compliance

At Aerofoam Ltd, we manufacture every foam product to meet the relevant UK and European standards for fire safety, chemical compliance and quality management.

For specifiers, furniture manufacturers and healthcare providers, working with a compliant supplier eliminates risk. Below we explain the key standards we work to and what they mean for your projects.

BS 5852 Ignition Sources 0–7 & Crib 5

BS 5852 is the British standard for assessing the ignitability of upholstered seating using smouldering and flaming ignition sources. It applies to both domestic and contract (public) seating.

  • Crib 5 the most demanding test, simulates a large flaming source equivalent to four double sheets of newspaper
  • Suitable for high-risk contract environments hotels, restaurants, theatres, hospitals and public waiting areas
  • Aerofoam Ltd supplies CMHR foam grades that meet Crib 5 requirements

Why it matters: If you manufacture seating for public or commercial use, your foam must pass the relevant BS 5852 ignition source test.

BS 7177 Mattresses & Healthcare Products

BS 7177 specifies flammability performance requirements for mattresses, mattress pads and bed bases used in domestic and non-domestic settings including hospitals, care homes and custodial facilities.

  • Low, Medium and High Hazard classifications for bedding
  • Healthcare and custodial settings typically require Medium or High Hazard ratings
  • Our foam cores for healthcare mattresses meet the relevant hazard level

Why it matters: BS 7177 is referenced by NHS Supply Chain and social housing frameworks. Non-compliant mattresses cannot be used in registered care environments.

The Furniture & Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations 1988

Commonly referred to as the “Furniture Regs,” this is the primary legislation governing the fire safety of domestic furniture in the UK one of the strictest regimes in the world.

  • All upholstery filling materials must pass Schedule 3 (cigarette and match-flame tests)
  • Foam must be certified as Schedule 3 compliant by an approved test house
  • All furniture supplied in the UK must carry a permanent fire-safety label

Why it matters: Every foam component in UK-market furniture must comply. Aerofoam Ltd supplies Schedule 3-compliant CMHR and polyether grades with full traceability.

REACH Chemical Compliance

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation & Restriction of Chemicals) is the regulation retained in UK law as UK REACH governing chemical substances in manufactured products.

  • Controls which flame retardants, bonding agents and additives can be used in foam production
  • Aerofoam Ltd works with raw material suppliers who are fully REACH-compliant
  • Our foam formulations use only permitted substances; supply chain is documented and auditable

Why it matters: REACH compliance is a legal requirement for all foam placed on the UK market. Specifiers benefit from confidence that restricted substances have been eliminated.

ISO 9001, ISO 14001 & ISO 45001 Triple Certified

Quality Management ensures consistent product quality, process control, and continuous improvement across every stage of our foam conversion and cushion manufacturing.

ISO 14001:2015

Environmental Management commits us to reducing waste, managing resources responsibly and minimising the environmental impact of our foam production.

ISO 45001:2018
