At Aerofoam Ltd, we manufacture every foam product to meet the relevant UK and European standards for fire safety, chemical compliance and quality management.
For specifiers, furniture manufacturers and healthcare providers, working with a compliant supplier eliminates risk. Below we explain the key standards we work to and what they mean for your projects.
Fire Safety Standard
BS 5852 is the British standard for assessing the ignitability of upholstered seating using smouldering and flaming ignition sources. It applies to both domestic and contract (public) seating.
Why it matters: If you manufacture seating for public or commercial use, your foam must pass the relevant BS 5852 ignition source test.
Healthcare & Mattress Flammability
BS 7177 specifies flammability performance requirements for mattresses, mattress pads and bed bases used in domestic and non-domestic settings including hospitals, care homes and custodial facilities.
Why it matters: BS 7177 is referenced by NHS Supply Chain and social housing frameworks. Non-compliant mattresses cannot be used in registered care environments.
UK Legislation
Commonly referred to as the “Furniture Regs,” this is the primary legislation governing the fire safety of domestic furniture in the UK one of the strictest regimes in the world.
Why it matters: Every foam component in UK-market furniture must comply. Aerofoam Ltd supplies Schedule 3-compliant CMHR and polyether grades with full traceability.
Chemical Compliance
REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation & Restriction of Chemicals) is the regulation retained in UK law as UK REACH governing chemical substances in manufactured products.
Why it matters: REACH compliance is a legal requirement for all foam placed on the UK market. Specifiers benefit from confidence that restricted substances have been eliminated.
Integrated Management System
Aerofoam Ltd is certified to three internationally recognised ISO standards, audited annually by a UKAS-accredited certification body.
Quality Management ensures consistent product quality, process control, and continuous improvement across every stage of our foam conversion and cushion manufacturing.
Environmental Management commits us to reducing waste, managing resources responsibly and minimising the environmental impact of our foam production.
Occupational Health & Safety provides a framework for managing workplace risks, protecting our employees and maintaining a safe manufacturing environment.
These three standards together form an Integrated Management System (IMS) covering quality, environment and safety in one audited framework a pre-qualification requirement for furniture and healthcare supply tenders.
Choosing the right foam grade for a specific regulation can be complex. Our team can advise on the correct specification for your project and provide supporting documentation.
